Sony's PlayStation 3 Going to 80GB
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is planning a new version of the PlayStation 3 game console with a higher-capacity hard-disk drive, according to a U.S. regulatory filing made by the company.
The filing to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission was made earlier this month to notify the FCC of a change to the game console's Bluetooth module. The FCC is the radio regulator in the U.S. and as such all new products that use radio or changes to these products must be submitted to the organization for approval before they can be sold.
Included in the filing's cover letter is notification of the new model: "The model CECHE01 to be added by the difference of the capacity of hard disk." It then says the new model will have an 80G-byte drive.
Sony currently sells two versions of the PlayStation 3. The cheaper model has a 20G-byte drive and the more expensive model has a 60G-byte drive.
Hard-disk storage technology is advancing all the time and higher capacity drives are regularly coming available. As better drives come on the market drive makers cut the price of drives or discontinue then altogether because they become uncompetitive against newer models.
Thus the new PlayStation 3 could be an evolution of the product forced by economics of the disk-drive industry or something more important in Sony's strategy.
A spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment in Tokyo declined to comment on the company's plans for future upgrades to the PlayStation 3.
On Wednesday Microsoft Corp. announced plans for a new version of the competing Xbox 360 console. The Xbox 360 Elite packs a 120G-byte drive-- against 20G bytes on existing machines-- and an HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) connection not offered on current models.

We've taken a sniper's aim at "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2," the newest installment in squad-based warfare from publisher UbiSoft and a sequel to one of last year's best games.
It's a definite step up from the original — and that's saying a lot. The game has a refined interface, even better graphics and an engaging multiplayer experience that balances out the extremely short single-player mode.
Called "GRAW2" for short, this new title (Rated E, $59.99 for Xbox 360, $49.99 for Windows PCs) picks up in the year 2014 with Capt. Scott Mitchell.
He leads the U.S. military's elite Ghost Recon unit and arrives at Fort Bliss, Texas, near El Paso, just in time to deal with a civil war in Mexico that threatens to boil over into the United States.
The resulting action makes for some of the best tactical squad-based gameplay around.
The single-player game is incredibly short — I wrapped it up in an afternoon — but at least it provides a quick rundown of the many improvements over the original.
The real game exists in the deep, varied multiplayer modes, which include online matches with others on Xbox Live as well in-person games with up to four people.
You'll have to make some basic decisions before each game — who do you want to accompany you on the battlefield? In single-player mode, you will be the one giving orders with a few well-considered button presses.
The basic mix of gunner, rifleman and medic unit works well for most fights, but there will be times when you'll want to swap out those spots for more specialized combatants like the grenadier, who can expertly destroy armored vehicles.
Different units make for different tactics, too. It takes longer, but sneaking from one cover spot to another, shooting only when necessary, is often the best approach. There will be times when explosive Rambo-style romps are required, so be ready to switch from sneak mode to combat mode when necessary.
The game packs sharp, detailed graphics with explosions that fill the screen and outdoor environments across Central America that come alive with realistically rendered buildings, trees and vehicles.
Fans of the original game will love this sequel. It may not be long but what you get is extremely polished and fun to play. And the multiplayer modes are about as good as online action gaming gets on the Xbox 360.

Web video shows Mexico man's beheading
ACAPULCO, Mexico - A video purportedly showing the beheading of a drug cartel hit man appeared on video-sharing Web site YouTube, and its makers called on Mexicans to kill more members of the gang.
The video appeared as the rival Gulf and Sinaloa gangs wage a bloody battle for trafficking routes and President Felipe Calderon is taking on organized crime with thousands of troops sent to drug-plagued areas.
"Do something for your country, kill a Zeta!" read a written message opening the five-minute video posted Friday. The Zetas are believed to be ex-army operatives serving as hit men for the Gulf cartel.
The footage shows a man in his underwear tied to a chair with a "Z" written on his chest and the message: "Welcome, kill women and children. Continue Ostion." It is unclear who Ostion is. One of the man's legs is marked with the name "Lazcano," possibly referring to Heriberto Lazcano, the suspected head of the Zetas.
The man is shown being interrogated about the Feb. 6 killing of five police officers and two secretaries in the Pacific resort city of Acapulco. The unseen interrogator repeatedly asks him about the killings, punching him several times until the man says he participated in the attacks. He is then beheaded. The footage ends with a message in red saying, "Lazcano you're next."
Anyone can post a video on YouTube and the site indicated the video was posted by a user named "matazetaregio." It was the only video posted by that user and there was no way to confirm the authenticity of the video or who made it.
A message seeking comment was left with YouTube on Sunday evening. The company removed the video late Sunday, and posted a message that the removal was "due to terms of use violation." YouTube policy bans videos with gratuitous violence or illegal acts.
A spokeswoman at Mexico's Attorney General's office said she had no information on whether the video was being investigated by authorities.
Mexican drug traffickers have begun videotaping their killings and carrying out beheadings, like Iraqi insurgents, to send a message to rival gangs or the government.
In the Iraqi videos, however, the aggressors use knives to cut off their victims' heads. In the Mexican video, the man is strangled by twisting a cord tied to metal rods until the pressure cuts through his neck.
The video appears to portray the aggressors as vigilantes. One comment posted on the site from a man who identifies himself as a 26-year-old from Mexico said, "That's how justice is served!"
The Feb. 6 killings at two police stations in Acapulco were among the most brazen attacks since Calderon's crackdown. Witnesses said the killings by more than a dozen men were videotaped by the assailants, although authorities have never found any footage.
Federal authorities have said they were investigating whether some of the slain officers had ties to drug traffickers, and whether the killings were meant to settle scores between the Gulf and Sinaloa drug cartels. No was has been charged with the killings.
In apparent attempts to terrorize those who oppose them, the gangs have placed severed heads on public display with threatening notes including one that read, "See. Hear. Shut Up. If you want to stay alive."

The video appeared as the rival Gulf and Sinaloa gangs wage a bloody battle for trafficking routes and President Felipe Calderon is taking on organized crime with thousands of troops sent to drug-plagued areas.
"Do something for your country, kill a Zeta!" read a written message opening the five-minute video posted Friday. The Zetas are believed to be ex-army operatives serving as hit men for the Gulf cartel.
The footage shows a man in his underwear tied to a chair with a "Z" written on his chest and the message: "Welcome, kill women and children. Continue Ostion." It is unclear who Ostion is. One of the man's legs is marked with the name "Lazcano," possibly referring to Heriberto Lazcano, the suspected head of the Zetas.
The man is shown being interrogated about the Feb. 6 killing of five police officers and two secretaries in the Pacific resort city of Acapulco. The unseen interrogator repeatedly asks him about the killings, punching him several times until the man says he participated in the attacks. He is then beheaded. The footage ends with a message in red saying, "Lazcano you're next."
Anyone can post a video on YouTube and the site indicated the video was posted by a user named "matazetaregio." It was the only video posted by that user and there was no way to confirm the authenticity of the video or who made it.
A message seeking comment was left with YouTube on Sunday evening. The company removed the video late Sunday, and posted a message that the removal was "due to terms of use violation." YouTube policy bans videos with gratuitous violence or illegal acts.
A spokeswoman at Mexico's Attorney General's office said she had no information on whether the video was being investigated by authorities.
Mexican drug traffickers have begun videotaping their killings and carrying out beheadings, like Iraqi insurgents, to send a message to rival gangs or the government.
In the Iraqi videos, however, the aggressors use knives to cut off their victims' heads. In the Mexican video, the man is strangled by twisting a cord tied to metal rods until the pressure cuts through his neck.
The video appears to portray the aggressors as vigilantes. One comment posted on the site from a man who identifies himself as a 26-year-old from Mexico said, "That's how justice is served!"
The Feb. 6 killings at two police stations in Acapulco were among the most brazen attacks since Calderon's crackdown. Witnesses said the killings by more than a dozen men were videotaped by the assailants, although authorities have never found any footage.
Federal authorities have said they were investigating whether some of the slain officers had ties to drug traffickers, and whether the killings were meant to settle scores between the Gulf and Sinaloa drug cartels. No was has been charged with the killings.
In apparent attempts to terrorize those who oppose them, the gangs have placed severed heads on public display with threatening notes including one that read, "See. Hear. Shut Up. If you want to stay alive."
In the most gruesome case, gunmen burst into a nightclub and rolled five heads onto the dance floor.
In 2005, a homemade DVD purporting to show four Zeta hit men being beaten and interrogated, and one of them being shot in the head, was sent anonymously to the Kitsap Sun, a newspaper in Bremerton, Wash.
The footage shows the men sitting bruised, bloody and bound. Prodded by an unseen interrogator, they detail how they kidnapped, tortured and killed their enemies, including a Mexican radio reporter and a Nuevo Laredo police chief.
Eleven federal agents were charged with kidnapping the four men and possibly helping kill them. Three of the men on the video were never seen again.

The gag included a mock press release quoting Google co-founder and president Larry Page, a step-by-step online installation manual, and a scatological selection of Frequently Asked Questions. On some Google sites, the company's official logo — a multicolored "Google" that changes according to the season and on holidays — substituted a commode for the second "g."
"There's actually a thriving little underground community that's been studying this exact solution for a long time," Page said in the facetious statement. "And today our Toilet ISP team is pleased to be leading the way through the sewers, up out of your toilet and — splat — right onto your PC."
Marissa Mayer, a Google vice president, called TiSP a "breakthrough product, particularly for those users who, like Larry himself, do much of their best thinking in the bathroom."
TiSP is the latest April Fools joke at the Mountain View, Calif.-based company, where hijinks pervade cubicles all year long. In blogs, Google employees joke about the recent injection of green dye into milk in the cafeteria, while another talks about zany underlings filling the vice president of engineering's office with sand.
Eric Raymond, a software developer in Malvern, Pa., and author of the New Hacker's Dictionary, said TiSP nailed several important tenets of hacker humor.
The concept of free wireless access parallels a legitimate, four-year deal between Google and EarthLink Inc. to provide free wireless Internet service throughout San Francisco starting in early 2008.
As part of the spoof, Google said TiSP would be offered in three speeds: Trickle, The No. 2, and Royal Flush. That's a reference to "Net Neutrality," a big political battle over tiered pricing that Google and other e-commerce companies are waging in Congress against cable and telephone companies.
"The leitmotif of hacker humor is precise reasoning from utterly bizarre premises, and once you're in that groove, you're absolutely fearless about going deeper," Raymond said. "We also have a tendency to deliberately zigzag between highly intellectual humor and utter slapstick. The more zigzags you can manage in a single spoof, the funnier it is."

Beatles label raises Web expectations
LONDON - Record company EMI Group PLC said Sunday it planned to unveil "an exciting new digital offering" with computer company Apple Inc., raising expectations that The Beatles' music catalog is about to be made available through Apple's iTunes online music store.
EMI said it would hold a news conference Monday at its London headquarters with its chief executive, Eric Nicoli, and Apple boss Steve Jobs "and a special live performance."
The company gave no further details.
EMI has been The Beatles' record label since the early 1960s.
The Beatles have so far been the most prominent holdout from iTunes and other online music services, and Apple's overtures to put the music online were stymied by a long-running trademark dispute with The Beatles' commercial guardian, Apple Corps. Ltd.
In February, Apple Inc. and Apple Corps resolved their legal feud over use of the apple logo and name, paving the way for an agreement for online access to the Fab Four's songs.
Apple Corps was founded by the Fab Four in 1968 and is still owned by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, the widow of John Lennon and the estate of George Harrison.
